The London Olympics Day 6 – More Gold for Brits and Michael Phelps

Results and Highlights from Day 6 of The London Olympics 2012

Team Great Britain are on a roll, after taking 5 days to pick up their first Gold medal, on day 6 of the London Olympics they collected two Golds and a Silver within 5 minutes. Canoeists Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott beat their countrymen David Florence and Richard Hounslow in the Men’s Canoe Slalom to win a Gold and Silver quinella for Great Britain. Shortly afterwards Shooter Peter Wilson won Gold in the double trap at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.

GB had already won another Rowing Silverin the Men’s Lightweight Four earlier in the day, coming in second behind South Africa. Australia came in fourth in the same event. That was backed up by the Men’s Sprint Cycling Team, who twice broke the world record on their way to winning Gold in the Velodrome. Team member, Sir Chris Hoy equaling Sir Steve Redgrave‘s British record of five Olympic titles. Maybe Sir Chris will get another Knighthood.

Another Silver was added to the British haul when Gemma Gibbons became Great Britain‘s first Olympic Judo medallist for 12 years. She lost her Gold medal match to American Kayla Harrison in the 78Kg final. But Gemma, who is ranked number 33 in the world, beat French world champion Audrey Tcheumeo in extra time to earn her place in the Gold medal competition.

As a result of one of Great Britain’s best ever Olympic days they ended the day 5th on the medal table, rising from 11th over night.

Australia’s disappointing showing in the pool continued on day 6. There were four more medals decided. Sally Foster finished 8th in the Women’s 200M Breaststroke. The medals were won by Rebecca Soni of the USASatomi Suziki of Japan and Iuliia Efimova of RussiaJapan changed their fortunes, after picking up 7 Bronze medals, by winning Silver in this event.

The Men’s 200M Backstroke was lead by American Ryan Lochte from the start. He looked certain for the Gold medal until the last 25 metres, when he faded badly and was passed by his countryman Tyler Clary and Japan’s Ryosuke Irie for their second Silver of the night. Australia’s Mitch Larkin came in 8th.

Lochte was again beaten by a countryman in the Men’s 200M Individual Medley. This time Michael Phelps led from start to finish picking up Gold and taking his record Olympic medal tally to 20. Laszlo Cseh of Hungary claimed the Bronze. James Goddard of Great Britain was 7th no Australians made the final.

As soon as Phelps finished the medal ceremony for the Men’s 200M Individual Medley he was running for the changing rooms to appear in the first semi final of the Men’s 100M Butterfly. He won that race comfortably too, finishing with the fastest qualifying time. So a 21st medal appears to be on the cards. Chris Wright of Australia finished 4th in that same semi, just missing out on qualifying for the final.

The final medal event of the evening was the Women’s 100M Freestyle. The Netherlands Ranomi Kromowidjojo won the Gold in a new Olympic record of 53 seconds flat. Silver and Bronze went to Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus and Yi Tang of China respectively. Melanie Schlanger of Australia just missed out on the Bronze by 0.03 of a second.

So no Gold for Australia on day 6 but they did win an unexpected Silver in the Canoe Slalom for Jessica Fox, and a Bronze medal in the Track Cycling Women’s Team Sprint by Anna Mearesand Kaarle McCulloch.

The Australian Boomers Basketball team beat China 81-61 in a match where NBA star Yi Jianlianwas injured and had to be helped from the court. It appeared to be a knee injury, but the extent of the damage is being assessed.

Australia also convincingly beat Great Britain in Women’s Water Polo, scoring, 16 goals to 3.
