Commonwealth Games week 1

Australia Dominate Medal Count

What a start to the Commonwealth GamesAustralia has dominated in a wide range of sports in the first week.

Swimming is always expected to be successful, but we had the comeback story of the games with Geoff Huegill winning Gold and Silver in the 100M and 50M Butterfly respectively. Huegillmanaged to lose 45kg during his training when he decided to come back to the sport and pick up the first Australian men’s individual Gold in 8 years.

The Cycling results were unbelievable with Australia picking up 12 of the 14 total Gold medals awarded in the velodrome. Anna Meares picked up 3 Golds, 2 individual and one in the Womens Team Sprint. EnglandAustralia’s biggest rivals sent a weakened team due to other commitments, but this should in no way take the shine off those medals.

In Gymnastics Australia won both the Mens and Womens Team events and Lauren Mitchellpicked up 3 individual Golds and a Silver. Unsurprisingly taking the Individual All Around Womens event.

There was of course the controversy of the Track with Sally Pearson being disqualified after winning the 100M event. This was a travesty. Yes she broke at the start, but it is grossly unfair to let someone compete in the event and then take the medal from them once they have won it. But Athletics has also been a winning ground for the Australian competitors, taking home Gold in the Womens Shot Put, Mens 100M EAD and Mens 20KM walk Congratulations to Louise Ellery, Simon Pattmore and Jared Tallent.

And who will forget the story of Simplice Ribouem, the Weightlifting refugee who won Bronze for Cameroon in Melbourne in 2006 and then sought asylum in Australia. This year picking up the Gold in the 85Kg Class and dedicating the win to his family back home and other refugees.

Well there is still much more to come in Track and Field and lots of team sports. I am looking forward to more WeightliftingAthletics and Boxing and waiting for the Rugby 7’s and a whole lot more.
