I came up with a new toy idea, and decided to pitch it to all of the toy companies, but none of them wanted anything to do with my idea. They thought it wasn’t that great and they had their own ideas. I decided to make the toys myself, so I went to a website design company in Toronto to help me start a website that would allow people to see my new toys and to order some for themselves. Setting up the website was fairly easy, but the harder step was yet to come.
I had made a prototype of the toys before out of paper first, and then out of wood. I needed to make molds from the wooden toys to cast the toys into plastic that would be easier to assemble and paint without being as heavy as wood and as light and brittle as paper. There was a local company that specializes in making molds and large scale plastic production who agreed to help me make an initial order of the toys. I had to put these toys on the market first and gauge interest for a larger order. If the orders sold out, I would ramp up production, and if not, I would scale things back and think of a new idea.
The toys were a massive hit and people were coming from all over to order the toys on my website. It got to a point where I was running out of toys and had to place in that order for a new batch. I also had to hire some people to help me ship out the orders. It felt weird having employees for the first time, but I was glad that I did, because packing thousands of boxes is a hard thing to do on your own.
